  1. Spain ruled Colombia for 300 years until its independence in 1819.  It was
  2. later split up into other countries such as: Venezuela, Ecuador, and Panama.  
  3. Even though Colombia is a democratic Latin nation it still has many problems
  4. with violence.  Other problems deal with land and social reform,
  5. industrialization and very a high birth rate.
